Keyword Grouping

The last step in the keyword research phase is keyword grouping. Your going to look for similar keywords in your keyword list and group them together. You should also organize each keyword group from most to least searches.

The reason you are grouping similar keywords together is because you will be targeting an entire group on one page. This is so you don't have to create unnecessary pages with pretty much the same content. Try to keep your groups down to a small number preferably no more than four, although in some cases you might have more and in others you will have a single keyword that is by itself.

Getting Started

First, you should open a new file in your word processor to store your keyword groups for later reference.

Keep each keyword group separated by a few empty lines or some sort of divider so you don't get them mixed up. Before you start grouping keywords together there are some guidelines you should follow to be sure the keywords actually belong in the same group.

1) Does the keyword phrase in question contain words that are also contained in another keyword?

Example: phoenix real estate and phoenix AZ real estate should be in the same keyword group.

2) Ask yourself: If someone searched for this keyword, would they be looking for the same information as someone who searched for the other keyword?

Sometimes a keyword phrase is really similar but one is more general than the other. Example: "phoenix real estate" and "phoenix real estate for sale". In this example, the modifier: "for sale" is telling you that the searcher is on the buying end and therefore you would want to send them to an appropriate page. The other is more general and we would want to send them to a more general page like the homepage where they will have the chance to follow a link to the buyer or seller side.

Each keyword group you create is going to need a landing page(the page we want Google to display when a searcher searches for one of these keywords). A big mistake I see a lot of real estate websites making is that they try to target every keyword on their homepage. Do not make this mistake.

If someone tells you what they want, give it to them. So if they are searching for condos, give them condos.

When you have your keyword groups set up, be sure to read through each group and make sure that all the keywords in that group would satisfy a searcher with the same content.
